Resin Bound
This is our most popular resin drive surface and is the number one choice for driveways and pathways for both our domestic and commercial customers. The smooth, decorative finish lends itself to any environment and is an excellent surface for everyday use. Resin bound is child friendly and poses no problems for disabled or wheelchair access, due to its smooth, flat surface.
With this system the stone is mixed along with the resin in an action forced mixer. This kind of mixing ensures each and every stone is coated in the resin.
The resin bound aggregate [stone] is then hand trowelled to a smooth finish at the appropriate depth depending on the size of aggregate used – usually between 15mm and 24mm. See our Resin Bound Specs for more information.

Resin bound surfaces are water permeable this allows liquids such as rain water to flow through the surface and into the ground. You will find that resin bound surfaces have voids across the surface, this allows air to flow through the surface freely and surface water to filter. Ideal not just for driveways but also paths, patios and tree pits.
Resin bound surfaces are compliant with SUDs regulations.
Ideal and perfect for cleaning as the surface can withstand a pressure wash, with no loose stones.
Often also called ‘trowelled’ surfacing, it can be made of blends of shingle, quartzite and or crushed granite, it’s then coated in a clear UV stable polyurethane resin. To make sure the two elements are combined, a force action mix process takes place, then cold poured onto the designated area. Once on the driveway or patio area, it is hand trowelled to a smooth surface ideal for driveways, car parks, patios and paths as it forms no kind of trip hazard.
Resin Bonded
Resin bonded is usually only used in a commercial environment where maximum grip is required. Resin bonded, due to its rough textured finish, should not be used near children’s play areas as it could cause serious injury when fallen upon.
With this system the resin is spread over the surface using a serrated squeegee and the stone is then scattered over the top. The stone sets into the resin.
This system lends itself well to pedestrian areas which require a lot of grip – and is not really recommended for driveways or vehicle areas. It can be used but we would only recommend using a super strong bauxite stone, which is limited to just a few colours.

Resin bonded surfaces are non-permeable often called ‘scattercoat’, this type of surface due to being non-permeable must be laid on a non-porous fine wearing course asphalt or even a concrete base. This means resin bonded surfaces are none compliant with SUDs regulations.
Soak-aways and drainage must be installed with resin bonded surfaces, this will prevent flooding.
The surface is made by using loose aggregate, mixed onto the resin, not as durable as a resin bound surface and over time can come away when it comes in to contact with constant use, such as car tyres.
Resin bonded surfaces you will find are not as easy to maintain and clean, the general depth of the driveway is around 3mm.
