Could homeowners with a paved driveway see a higher water bill?

The ever increasing risk of floods across the UK are causing the government to consider ways to generate income to deal with the flood defence infrastructure. With the suggestion water companies charge home owners based on their square meter coverage of block paving around their property.

It’s been stated that over 600,000 homes will considered as high risk of flooding in just over 30 years’ time reports NIC (National Infrastructure Commission) they go on to report that 65,000 of these homes could be down to the none permeable surface of their driveway such as block paved.

This scheme is already applicable to some commercial properties with water regulator OFWAT also urging trials of the scheme in some areas of the UK residential properties.

Government Investment

The Government has already planned in a £56bn investment, but will also be urged to match the additional raised income to reduce wastewater pollution.

A study carried out in 2015 by the Royal Horticultural Society has seen properties with block paved driveways treble across the UK.

There are other suggestions being made to help lower the risk of flooding and these include permitting new build properties to automatically use the local drainage system but divert to swallows and ponds.

Professor Jim Hall a national infrastructure commissioner states “It’s clear that increased rainfall and increased urbanisation, we need to take this type of flooding much seriously”

“The solution is clear – reduce the amount of water going down drains while improving the capacity of those drains”

Resin Driveways

You’ll be please to know resin driveways don’t have the impact of the already under pressure drainage system as resin is a SUDs compliant surface, this means water can pass through it to the natural ground beneath it.

You can find out more about resin being SUDs compliant here.
